The "2005 Euro-Taiwan IT Cooperation event", or EuroTaiwan2005, has been successfully held on April 28 & 29, 2005 in Taipei (Grand Hotel) and in Hsinchu (ITRI headquarters). Over 360 delegates from Europe and Taiwan had positively answered the invitation of the organisers (the European Commission and the National Science Council, NSC) to come and work together to strengthen short to medium term S&T cooperation links and envision cooperation projects that could be launched, in the ICT field, between research laboratories and industries from Europe and Taiwan.
In their opening addresses, Madame Hsiu-Lien Lu, Vice President of Taiwan, and Mr Brian McDonald, Head of the European Economic and Trade Office in Taiwan, expressed their conviction that a favourable ground did exist for the existing cooperation links between Europe and Taiwan to be developed in a spirit of mutual scientific and economic benefits and friendship. Other guests of honour developed this framework more into detail in the event plenary sessions. To name a few: Dr Maw-Kuen Wu, Minister of NSC, Dr Fadah Hsieh, Deputy Minister of the Council for Economic and Trade Office, Dr Johnsee Lee, President of ITRI.
Beyond, plenary sessions, parallel sessions focusing on a wide variety of ICT related topics, and hosting almost 100 presentations from European and Taiwanese organisations allowed fruitful exchange of experiences and visions, and the discussion of a great number of "pre-proposal ideas". Many networking moments had also been planned to allow delegates to visit an interesting exhibition organised in the event venue by leading Taiwanese laboratories, and to walk through a poster area displaying the presentations from those organisations that had answered the "Call for Papers" but could not be presented during the sessions. European delegates have also been invited to visit the ITRI flagship laboratories in the ICT field and to take part in social events, enabling a very efficient networking with their Taiwanese colleagues in a less formal atmosphere.
In the wrap-up session, Dr Kwang-Lung Lin, Director General at NSC, Mr Jean-Yves Roger, Principal Administrator at the European Commission, and Mr Roger Torrenti, Advisor of the GAPFILL Project, concluded by assessing that, from the feedback they had received from European and Taiwanese delegates, the event should have successfully reached its overall objective of strengthening cooperation links between Europe and Taiwan, that it should have a noticeable impact on the future participation of Taiwanese organisations in the IST Programme, and that suited follow-up activities should be carefully evaluated to build upon the results achieved so far.
